This was followed by, l'homme himself, Laurent demonstrating some of the functionalities and speed improvements in this next generation of the 4d product line. What was remarkable about the first session, led by Joshua fletcher with Jean-Yyves running the demos seated (apart from the fact Joshua got married last week and was doing this rather than being on honeymoon) , was the detail that had been gone into to make the job of upgrading for a developer as easy as possible. One by one the team went through all the potential hiccups that might have to be dealt with eg those who have sub fields or with different language data in different fields (the example was English and Japanese) each issue neatly dispensed with by a live demo of how to handle these and all of these - and more - with example databases on the summit CD ! Laurents occasional coughs from a cold picked up on the flight were easily forgiven once some of the demos of V11 and previews of the next version were run live showing many of the functions that have been awaited. Searches on several million records taking milliseconds with the new optimised 'intelligent' indexing were contrasted to the same in 2004, taking what seemed an eternity but turned out to be 57 seconds Laurent went into detail of how this works behind the scenes - the system optimising choosing if to use clusters or not and the presidence of sort orders The biggies were all in there - longer text fields, faster execution, nested transactions, much better graphics support Pre- emptive multithreading, built in regex, ability to delete tables and fields far more detail and probably accurate reports of which can be found on http://www.4dtoday.com and http://www.slicksurface.com/blog/ home.html) What i liked particularly was that a great deal of thought has obviously gone in to making the upgrade a success for each individual developer or organisation - with eg the defaults being universal binary turned off or the possibility to run over Rosetta if plug ins are not yet upgraded . Everything has been thought of. In a sense this is all about moving into the next generation of software and jumping onto 4d's faster boat - compatible with the technologies Apple and the pack are bringing out in the future - but you can bring your old life belt with you for now. Those who need client server will have to wait a little longer, Brendons priorities are getting it right so a little longer and all of this will be there - on a stable release Anyway were off to the bar now after a day of new information i'm fading fast i think a nice glass of wine and Memphis Steak will do the trick John John Convey -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The demo had 1 billion records which contained two principal fields. One was cars and the other was colours. The search was for all cars which were blue. With the traditional 4D indexes selected in v11 it took approximately 50 seconds to find all the blue cars. With the new cluster indexing in v11 the same search was almost instant. I estimate it was less than half a second. Cluster indexing will make a big difference when the fields you are searching have repeated values and are not unique keys. So far I have not seen any examples of free-text searches. The example mixing SQL statements in the 4d method editor and using a standard 4d method to extract supporting data from an external source over the web was impressive The summmit format now breaks into 'pick and choose' sessions The 4d to iphone session - i thought would be some geek with a hack but it turns out that 4d have basically made available an AJAX toolkit that makes it a breeze to publish reports to the iphone with no coding unless you want to change the interface by altering the iphone.css files other interface configurations like eg setting up business indicators (say green for dept manager keeping within budget or showing total as a % are all part of the kit ) interestingly there also seem to be a number of Apple guys around in the sessions keen to work with 4d developers... as always more detail can be found at the these links http://www.4dtoday.com http://www.slicksurface.com/blog/home.html the workshops are very useful - 4d technical guys help out with your specific issue - i'm putting together some video help files nad they were very helpful so the party - funky soul band with food, drink and tour around the Gibson guitar factory -that was still going strong when i left late on so maybe the early sessions will not be so well attended this morning ? john john convey -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Orchard software -who have a large presence here got a US developers award Bill huttons presentation on '4d Live window' was packed and despite the sound issues gave a great insight into how it works and i imagine saved hours if not days for developers by explaining clearly the different platform and browser issues that need to be taken to account. lastly a couple of other things i meant to mention nested transactions - are one of the feature requests in V11 but more importantly by default this is turned off It can be not immediately obvious that you have for example two start transactions - in an existing database - this needs to be checked before upgrading if you are to take advantage of nested transactions - but you can upgrade and defer that checking by leaving the default 'do not use nested transactions' on. also 'disable running on startup methods' is possible - so any potential issues can be ironed out oh er Lastly -Lastly, the iphone here is news i'm sure you have heard about Apple and development on this new platform iPhone to support third-party programmes By Kevin Allison in San Francisco Published: October 17 2007 19:47 | Last updated: October 18 2007 01:49 Apple on Wednesday moved to placate restless software developers by announcing plans to allow software makers to create programmes for its iPhone mobile handset. The announcement marks a change of tack for Apple, which has long resisted opening its products to outsiders in favour of closed systems in which it controls the features loaded on its hardware. It is likely to spark a flurry of software development as programmers rush to build applications that take advantage of the iPhone?s touch-screen interface and its ability to make calls, browse the internet, and store photos and music. ?You?re going to get a lot more applications than you would if you have a closed environment,? said Van Baker, an Apple analyst at Gartner, the market research group. Such applications could include contact management and other business software ? a lack of which has limited the iPhone?s appeal to corporate customers, who are among the biggest buyers of smartphone handsets. In a statement on Apple?s website, Steve Jobs, the company?s co-founder and chief executive, said it planned to provide a development toolkit to outside programmers by February. It is likely to spark a flurry of software development as programmers rush to build applications that take advantage of the iPhone?s touch- screen interface and its ability to make calls, browse the internet, and store photos and music. In a statement on Apple?s website, Steve Jobs, the company?s co- founder and chief executive, said it planned to provide a development toolkit to outside programmers by February.
